The Academy of HIV Medicine

The Academy of HIV Medicine is the nation’s leading independent organization of healthcare professionals dedicated to providing excellence in HIV care and prevention. TAG served the Academy team to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Implement an inclusive recruiting campaign to hire and onboard staff of color that included evaluating job descriptions for biased language and creating a diverse and welcoming interview experience.

  2. Providing expertise and guidance for the launch of an inaugural African American advisory board

  3. Staff training on diversity and inclusion

  4. Creating a diversity and inclusion position statement

  5. Revising an existing style-guide to include a greater focus on terms and concepts unique to communities of color and other historically marginalized groups

TAG also conducted a racial equity analysis of the Academy’s credentialing program with the participation of the staff, board, and credentialing committee. Applying a racial equity lens is a concept and practice focused on achieving equal outcomes for people of color relative to their counterparts. In applying a racial equity policy framework to the organization’s credentialing program, TAG produced key insights around barriers to entry for historically underrepresented HIV-care providers and provided the Academy guidance to revamp its credentialing program.
